In today’s tough economic climate, businesses are always looking for a competitive edge. In order to save money, some employers in California may choose to break laws or participate in unlawful practices. Unfortunately, workers who blow the whistle and report illegal activities often are forced to endure acts of revenge and retaliation. Workers who face retaliation have legal options at their disposal.
A man in another state filed a wrongful termination lawsuit after he was allegedly retaliated against and fired. The man worked as a painter for a construction business. According to the lawsuit, the man’s boss required him to attend a Christian bible study for one hour each week.
Although the plaintiff said he practiced a different religion than his supervisor, he was still forced to attend the bible study. The man claims that this made him uncomfortable so he did not attend one study group. Allegedly, the plaintiff was fired in retaliation for not attending the bible study. The man seeks $50,000 for lost wages and $750,000 in damages for humiliation, mental stress and loss of enjoyment of life.
Loss of employment is an event that no person wants to face. When a person loses his or her job and livelihood as an act of retaliation, the effects can be psychologically and financially devastating. Those in California who have been subjected to retaliation in the workplace have the right to seek legal representation. A successfully litigated lawsuit could result in a substantial monetary award to help cover lost wages and other financial losses that may have occurred as a result of such a traumatic experience.
