According to the lawsuit, the man worked as finance director for an auto dealership. The lawsuit says the man was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo a laryngectomy. After the procedure, doctors provided him with a prosthetic speaking device.
However, upon returning to work, the man said he met with superiors and was told that his speaking device would be unappealing to customers. The lawsuit said that the owner of the dealership told the managers not to discuss the plaintiff’s employment status with him and the man was allegedly fired over email. The plaintiff accused his former employer of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. A federal jury sided with the plaintiff and awarded him a settlement of $4.9 million.
